Dominican singer Andy Andy comes from the famed Villalona family, and brings their merengue roots to his sound, which is a vibrant update of the Dominican bachata style.
Not wanting to capitalize on the family name to make his own, he dropped it entirely, preferring to stand or fall on his own merits.
Much of IRONIA is occupied with the guitar-and-percussion-driven, mid-tempo bachata sound that is Andy's stock in trade, over which he lays down his mellifluous vocals. The unusual thing about the album is that, towards the end, the first two songs are reprised in "ballad" versions that de-emphasize the percussive aspects in favor of a more romantic approach.
In the interest of leaving no stone unturned, Andy Andy closes IRONIA with yet a third version of opener "Que Ironia," this one taking a hip-hop-inflected reggaeton approach. With this much diversity on display, it's hard to guess what else the Dominican songbird might have up his sleeve.
